How to fix boot problems in Windows XP/2003

There are many questions at this forum about boot loader problems. This method will help in fixing ~90% of problems, like this:

Follow the basic instructions:
1. boot from USB drive or Windows CD to recovery console

Soon you will see this screen, press R to boot recovery console

Recovery console black screen will appear, wait a little bit

That, select the copy of Windows you have on your PC:

Login as Administrator. Usually there is no password, just press Enter:

2. Fix the Master Boot Record boot code
Enter fixmbr and press Enter. This will write correct master boot record to your hard drive:

Enter Y and press Enter:

3. Fix the boot record on drive C:
Now, enter fixboot c: and press Enter:

Enter Y and press Enter to do this:

4. Rebuild boot.ini file
It’s a file holding information about all Windows on your PC, enter bootcfg /rebuild and Windows recovery console will filed all Windows installed and put it to boot.ini:

Than enter the name of Windows boot loader will show in the screen when you press F8 key
OS load parameters can be blank (just press enter)

5. Copy boot files to drive C:
Go to your CD of USB drive to i386 folder and copy ntdetect and ntldr (and bootfont.bin if you have non-US Windows version):
E:
cd i386
copy ntdenect.com c:\
copy ntldr c:\

Where E: is your CD/USB drive name. For USB path will be \$WIN_NT$.~LS\i386 instead of \i386 for CD.
